“Il Demofoonte as a subject for dramma per musica: Johann Adolf Hasse and other composers of the 18th century”

On 21–22 September 2019 an international musicological conference on the theme “Il Demofoonte as a subject for dramma per musica: Johann Adolf Hasse and other composers of the 18th century” will be held in the Centre of Baroque Culture in Český Krumlov. The conference is being organised by the Institute of Art History, Czech Academy of Sciences, in cooperation with the Centre of Baroque Culture in Český Krumlov, the Hof-Musici ensemble, and the Mozart Society in the Czech Republic, under the patronage of the Italian Cultural Institute in Prague, and with the financial support of the Commission for the Regional Cooperation of the Regions and Institutes of the Czech Academy of Sciences and of the Johann Adolf Hasse-Stiftung in Hamburg.

The conference is taking place to mark the modern world premiere of the opera Il Demofoonte by Johann Adolf Hasse (1699‒1783) in the Baroque theatre in Český Krumlov château on 20, 21, and 22 September. Hasse composed the opera for Dresden and later once again for Naples. In Český Krumlov Ondřej Macek and the Hof-Musici ensemble will stage a version of the opera that was first heard in the Teatro San Giovanni Crisostomo in Venice in December 1748. This will be the fifth time Český Krumlov will see a historically informed interpretation of a Baroque opera linked with musicological research, the final result of which is always a publication of the proceedings of the conference. This year’s conference will include papers by researchers from Italy, Germany, Spain, Poland, and the Czech Republic.
